Regional anesthetic procedures are being utilised with increasing frequency by anaesthesiologists managing patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. This Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists monograph presents the potential benefits (intense postoperative analgesia, stress response attenuation, and thoracic cardiac sympathectomy) and potential risks (most notably hematoma formation) of utilising regional anaesthetic techniques in patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery.
